Hilltop Home

This 3,300-square-foot Eugene, Ore., home sits at the dead end of a road on top of a hill and enjoys nearly 360 degrees of views.

Tree Conservation

The trees were maintained during construction to comply with Eugene codes which require protection of certain trees on properties during construction.

Take in the View

Mature trees frame the views from the home's two-story living area.

Study in Contrasts

Pieces of exotic hardwood were hand-selected to frame the door. The warm, woody tones offer an earthy contrast to the sleek gunmetal-colored facade.

Sit for a Spell

A built-in wooden bench offers a functional -- and beautiful -- spot near the door to sit down and put on or remove shoes.

Cozy Conversation

A conversational area serves either as a sunny spot to read a book or overflow seating for guests when the homeowners are hosting a crowd.

Open, Airy Spaces

The modern lines and grand ceiling heights make this open-plan eat-in kitchen and living space feel fresh and open.

A Kitchen for the Home Cook

Professional-grade appliances and an expansive kitchen island suit a family who love to cook.

Opening Up the Kitchen

Storage is mostly tucked into the spaces in the lower half of the kitchen at the request of the homeowners, who did not want upper cabinetry.

Custom Light Fixture

Builder Jordan Iverson designed the steel light fixture which hangs over the island. "I like to design at least one light fixture in each project from scratch," he says. "(The homeowners) said run with it. I didn't even show them the design until the end."

Indoor/Outdoor Flow

The patio is accessed through the dining room so that it's easily accessible from the kitchen when entertaining or eating outdoors.

Pops of Red

Though the overall color palette in the home is sleek and muted, Jordan introduced pops of color in key spaces to spice up the look.

Messing Things Up

Jordan wanted this dining room light fixture to evoke a colorful, messy look in contrast to the sleek, modern aesthetic of the home.

Powder-Coated Steel

It took three people to hang the red powder-coated steel beams from which the lighting cords hang.

Midcentury Aesthetics

Tufted seating, heavily grained wood, a patterned rug and subtle pops of color are the perfect foils to the sleek, industrial construction in the living area.

Room Divider

The fireplace wall serves as a sleek backdrop for the flat-screen TV.

Steel, Glass and Wood

Steel, glass and reclaimed wood paneling combine for a modern, industrial fireplace with a touch of rusticity.

Windows That Wow

A wall in the two-story great room is decked out with floor-to-ceiling windows affording views of the surrounding trees and far-off views. A non-traditional layout of the windows adds to the modern feel of the home.

Space to Stretch

Ideal for entertaining, the outdoor space is situated directly outside the open plan kitchen and features an area for dining al fresco as well as space for the family to set up their beloved ping pong table.

Floating Water Feature

A floating water feature is minimalistic, matching the modern style of the patio area design.

Modern Lines

The clean lines of the floating benches made from meranti are mimicked in the modern fire box.

Emphasizing Height

Tall contemporary windows and a long chandelier emphasize the grand height of this stairwell.

Sputnik Chandelier

A Sputnik-style chandelier is elegantly framed by a large, modern picture window behind it, creating a lovely juxtaposition of metal and nature.

Inviting Bedroom

Contemporary windows and reclaimed wood paneling turn into a dramatic, earthy display in this inviting bedroom. Furnishings are kept simple so as not to compete with the view of the home's natural surroundings.

Contemporary Bathroom

A black-tiled shower provides a subtle contrast in this otherwise neutral, contemporary bathroom. The shape of the modern vanity and sink is echoed throughout the space in the mirror, shower bench, window and even in the luxe light fixture.

Floating Vanities

The floating vanities are hardly deeper than the vessel sinks which sit atop them, making their visual impact on the room minimal but striking.

Sleek Shower

A rain shower head and teak bench offer an earthiness to this sleek, black, contemporary walk-in shower. A strip of river rock running down the wall spills onto the floor of the shower, creating an elegant break in the oversized wall tile.

Time for Family

Leather-upholstered furniture provides an attractive-yet-durable option for family rooms. This comfortable living space also includes a wide-screen TV for movie nights and a large picture window and a telescope for use to enjoy the view.

Cozy up With a Book

A cozy corner serves as a library thanks to a comfy leather chair, cozy rug and plenty of shelf space.

Luxury for Guests

A guest bathroom is kept simple with clean lines and a pleasing, neutral palette. A rain showerhead adds a luxurious touch for extra comfort.

Landscape Lighting

Thoughtful landscape lighting and window design turns this modern home into a work of art when lit up at night.

Highlighting the Architecture

Bright interior lighting highlights the architectural details of this modern home at night.
