Contemporary Shared Kitchen and Dining Room

A homeowner wanted to update her closed-off, cramped kitchen. FINNE Architects created a plan to not only open up the kitchen, but to create a shared space with the dining room, as well. The contemporary space has a welcoming feel to it, while complementing the house's traditional style.

Layered Lighting in Contemporary Kitchen

Soft and layered lighting creates a sense of warmth in the open plan kitchen and dining room.

Striking Kitchen Island in Contemporary Kitchen

In this kitchen, the large island resembles a table more than its stout, storage-heavy counterparts. Its open design, with a slab wood top and smooth legs, keeps the space feeling light and open while still providing valuable storage below. A trio of pendants work the space overhead, while recessed lights span the length of countertop.

Custom Dining Room Table

A striking dining table features a dark elm wood tabletop. The shared kitchen and dining areas are tied together through the elm wood, which also comprises the island countertop.

Materials Bring Out Texture in Kitchen

High-quality materials take center stage in this kitchen. The custom cabinets are crafted with bleached Alaskan yellow cedar frames and bamboo panels. Dark limestone countertops bring out the bamboo-like pattern in the stone mosaic backsplash. Adjacent to the backsplash is a horizontal window with a resin panel that incorporates natural seagrass.
